Key Stage 3
 
During year 7 the students will be introduced to drama and will be taught various skills such as hot seating, freeze frame and mime. They will study a different topic each term ranging from Evacuees in WW2 to creating imaginative characters using the world of Roald Dahl as stimulus. Their skills will continue to be developed as they reach year 8 where they will study different genres of theatre for example horror and physical theatre.
 
  
Key Stage 4 - BTEC Performing Arts
 
Students get a choice of Musical Theatre or Acting and will study their chosen pathway for three years.
 
In the first year of Performing Arts acting students will have mastered many of the skills needed to deal with more mature topics and their acting will be put to the test through the use of various drama practioners. The musical theatre students will study various different musical developing their skills in singing, dancing and acting.
 
In the second year of Performing arts the students will learn various skills while preparing a production for family and friends to watch. This performance will include singing, dancing and acting from the musical theatre students and devised work and scripted work from the acting students. They will also work on their individual performance skills deciding which skill they wish to concentrate on whether it be singing, dancing or acting.
 
During their second year they will take on a back stage role for example set designer, costume designer, lighting designer and together as a class they will prepare a full length production. This can be a play or a musical and will be decided within the class. This unit will allow the students to take a real look at how a performance comes to life and enables students, who are also interested in the backstage areas of performance broaden their understanding of the theatre.

Every year the Music, dance and drama departments join together to great a whole school production! This is a great chance for students from all year groups to work together and create a performance they are very proud of. In previous years we have performance ‘Hairspray’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Fame’, Cats and last year ‘Beauty and The Beast’. This year’s performance is the ‘Lion King’.
 
 
Extra-curricular information
 
Dance classes are available to students who would like to study Tap, Ballet and Theatre Craft these students can take optional exams with the International Dance Teachers Association for which we have 100%.
